#199 - Why ban Soup Kitchen?

KUALA LUMPUR: Soup kitchens will no longer be allowed to operate within a 2km radius of Lot 10, which covers a large portion of the city centre, effective immediately, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
"This activity just encourages people to remain homeless and jobless. There have been many such people whom we have found jobs for, who returned to that life because they said it is easier," he said at press conference to present official appointment letters to representatives on the Non-Islam House of Worship committee in Menara DBKL here Thursday.
He added that the sessions also resulted in littering and this in turn attracted scavengers that brought about diseases.
"We already have all kinds of garbage-related problems in the city and spend more than RM90mil a year collecting it. I do not see my actions as harsh but necessary in order to create a disciplined society," he said.

My name is Janice Heng. I am not good in putting my thoughts into words. Therefore, i always chose to stay quiet because i am not good in voicing up or standing up at all. Today, after i've read this from a post shared on facebook, it definitely got my attention because a few years back, for a high school subject, my friends and i went over to soup kitchen to help and interview the people. We helped up and that's how we got introduced to Soup Kitchen. To make it short, Soup Kitchen is a place that gives out free food or food at a lower market price for those less fortunate. They also help those jobless people to find jobs.

At this point, this news definitely caught my attention because of the reasons he actually gave. I cannot believe he complained about those garbage and the money they spent to clear them.
First of all, you don't close down a place that is opened for a good cause. Instead, you help up and support them instead. Soup kitchen is not doing anything that is bad. They are helping! I am so amused by his thoughts. It is like 'You are helping. It is bad. So stop!' Like seriously?! Yes, you mentioned about how people who found job will return to that life because it is easier but that is not a reason to shut down this place. You cannot control certain people's thought but i am very sure out of 1000 people, only a few might have that kind of perception.
Maybe you can actually help soup kitchen to find job for those jobless people who really needs a job. You can think of so many other ways to solve this but all you could come up with is to shut it down. I wish you could actually gave us, The Nation/ The Society a chance to speak up and give so many better opinions in improving the service rather than conclude it just like that. Isn't this country practicing, '1 Malaysia'? Then why isn't the society get a chance to have a say or have the rights to make decisions?
#1 Dustbin
You can actually provide extra rubbish bin around the area so that people will be aware of throwing the rubbish into the bin. There is so many more places out there flooded by rubbish and i don't see you shutting it up.

#2 Jobs
You can help those in need of jobs by providing them government servant job. I am pretty sure people who have family wouldn't mind any job at all as long as they can manage to support their family. I might not have a better idea, but give the society a chance to give you more opinion on this. Many minds can make up a better solution.

#3 Support
To shut down the society who is actually helping for a good cause definitely gave a big disappointment to the nation. Instead of supporting, you complain about the money you guys have put in to clear the rubbish. Maybe you can help to support the soup kitchen by opening a few branches. Then give those jobless a chance to work in soup kitchen and at least pay them. This way, you can also help up those jobless people isn't it? I know, not all are willing enough to take up the job but there are SO MANY people who walk in and out of soup kitchen hoping they could get a job. I am pretty sure most are willing to.

I might not be able to give out brilliant solutions or my opinions might not matter but for you to shut it down is worst than not being able to give brilliant solutions at all. This is just an opinion from me. Just hope there will be more and more people standing up for soup kitchen and support them. It is a big disappointment to have people supporting to close down. :(

Sincerely, disappointed.
Jan
